Residency – week 1

Week 1 draws to a close here in Chiyoda. The first few days were spent setting-up, getting supplies, and hanging some digital prints of work that I completed last year. I did manage to get quite a few ideas for new works sketched out. There was also much activity around the 3331 Arts Center, so I was participating and meeting a lot of people here, and also at the Tokyo Art Fair. A big thanks to Lana and Hiro for helping with all of my studio and apartment setup, as well as introducing me to a lot of people and accompanying me to the Tokyo Art Fair (and getting me a discount)!

Some of my favourite galleries were exhibiting at this year’s fair: OTA Fine Arts, Gallery Naruyama, Gallery Side 2, Shugo Arts, Kobayashi Gallery, Gallery Suchi, Yamamoto Gendai, Inga Gallery, Gallery Stephanie, Ando Gallery, Art Gallery Shukado, Gallery Toki-no-Wasuremono.

I was also lucky to meet some remarkable artists, and gallery owners, both from Japan and abroad: Rom Villaseran, Kara de Dios, Sam Quinteros, Aisho Miura, Hidetoshi Yamada, Kentaro Totsuka, Hiroyuki Kimura, Yuki Yamamoto, Arisa Nakahara, Sisui Akiba, Masaaki Sasamoto.

6 weeks in Tokyo

I was quite happy to learn that my application for the 3331 Art Chiyoda residency in Tokyo was successful! This will be the perfect place to pursue a few threads of investigation in my artwork: comparing modern and ancient culture; experimenting with abstract and representational forms; working with narrative/sequential art.
